Dear Friends, Pjrim is knocking on our doors, a fact that got me thinking about the connection between this holiday and happiness. In school during Purim the learning was minimal because the children were busy in keeping the secret or exposing the secret of their costumes. There was the search for that one costume that would impress everyone, and especially distract everyone or maybe fool everyone. Not less miserable were the mothers. Party City was not invented yet, so mothers had to sew the costume with their own hands. Today as a mother I think of this as an especially impossible project. And so the Book of Esther and its historic story became a minor side effect of Purim. The children of Israel did not care at all about the story or its heroes. About Haman, his only importance was the filling of his ears dates or chocolates, the second was preferred ; , and no one stopped even for a second to think "If we want to be happy, why the mask?" It seems that my mother, an especially patient woman, felt relief and even allowed a little smile when one year I decided "That's it, I not disguising any more." In traditional remedies, C. rhizoma and S. radix are commonly used together to treat gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea. This harvest holiday emphasizes the values of hospitality, the rewards of work and our trust in G-d. It reminds us of the period of time the Jews wandered in the desert after leaving Egypt. Shemini Atzeret: The eighth day of Sukkot, a day of solemn assembly, is a holiday on which prayers for rain are recited. A memorial service is also held. Simchat Torah: Simchat Torah is associated with Sukkot, but is an independent, joyous holiday. On Simchat Torah, the cycle of reading from the Torah ends and begins again. In each synagogue, the Torah scrolls are taken out and carried around in processions. Chanukah: Chanukah is the eight-day Festival of Lights. It recalls the fight of the Maccabees for religious freedom. We light the menorah for eight nights to commemorate the victory over the Grecco-Syrians and rededication of the Temple. Purim: Literally "lots, " Purim is a holiday that comes in the middle of the Hebrew month of Adar. On Purim, we read the Scroll of Esther Megillat Esther, often referred to as the Megillah ; , which tells the story of how the intervention of Queen Esther and Mordechai saved the Jewish communities of ancient Persia from certain annihilation. We celebrate this rescue with high-spirited revelry, including wearing costumes of the main characters in the Megillah, exchanging gifts of food, giving charity Tzedakah ; to those in need, and baking and eating Purim pastries called Hamantaschen. As Spring finally approaches, Lake Park Synagogue will soon be celebrating Purim, Pesach, and it's 25th Anniversary. Personally, I looking forward to finishing over five years as President and working with the incoming administration to ensure the next 25 years and make them memorable. I want to thank Rabbi Shlomo and Noa Levin for everything they have done since joining the LPS family almost 5 years ago. They have helped not only our Synagogue, but also many people ranging from students to seniors to me. I would also like to thank our Board of Directors and Executive Committee for their assistance and support. Although we strive to provide educational opportunities, Shabbatons, Chanukah and Purim parties, and other social events, the main focus of a Synagogue is to provide religious services to its members and the community. As a small congregation, we must work together to make sure that we do not lose sight of this, and I thank all of you who make that special effort to come to Shabbat services regardless of snow, sleet, or ice, especially Tamar and Jacob Loewenberg who walk over 5 miles each Shabbat. They set the standard for all of us. Purim and Pesach activities and schedules are found inside this RUACH. Thank you to Ronna Pachefsky for chairing the Purim Seudah Shabbat dinner and to Joanne Ladenson for organizing a Hamantaschen Making Party on the Sunday prior to Purim. Both Purim and Shabbat Zachor underscore the importance of remembering and confronting anti-Semitism. The Jewish community has come far in gaining acceptance in American society. Yet, even in the United States, the perpetuation of myths and stereotypes about the Jewish people seems to be a never ending source of bias and bigotry. Adults in the workplace and students in schools around the country still face ridicule about how Jews are cheap, control the media, and own the world s banks. Most recently, in a serious revival of the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, " myths about Jewish control of the US government have had a devastating impact on impressions of the Jewish community at home and abroad. Across the Middle East, Arabic media outlets produce an ongoing barrage of hateful words and violent images. As the internet and international cable channels make disseminating information easier every day, negative propaganda about Jews seeps steadily into the views of many in our own communities. No person or group should be negatively stereotyped based on their religious beliefs. Yet, even in the year 2008, Jews are regularly taunted and alienated simply because they are Jewish. From personal experience, we all know this alienation occurs in both subtle and overt ways much more often than we would like to admit. This is why Shabbat Zachor is such an important marker on our Jewish calendar and why it is imperative that as many communities as possible take this opportunity to spread awareness about anti-Semitism and the need to respond strategically whenever it occurs. In partnership with Jewish communities all around New England, the local office of the AntiDefamation League will be highlighting this Shabbat of remembrance as Anti-Semitism Awareness Shabbat . Synagogues, Hillels, day-schools, community centers and even individuals should see this as an opportunity grapple with issues of classic and contemporary anti-Semitism, anti-Israel bias, and the importance of speaking out.

We each have a study partner, and as we've started learning more we 've tried to involve our children in the experience in various ways . We know that Purim is just around the corner, and until now our observance of this holiday consisted of attending the Megilla reading in costume ; at our temple. It's a great experience but we're looking to add something new that would make the holiday even more meaningful. Preparing for Purim was, indeed, inspirational this year. The kitchen buzzed with chatter and activity on March 5, and 1, 200 perfect hamantashen were ready at 2 p.m. Out in the "big room, " 300 Shalach Manot bags were ready to receive them, and throughout the day, purple and gold bags full of goodies left the synagogue in the arms of volunteers who delivered them to congregants near and far. Some were mailed to congregants who are REALLY far away. I wish I could have seen the look on the faces of congregants in Florida when they opened a plain brown cardboard box and found treats from their Ohev family! This project took a lot of help, and EVERYONE was important in pulling it off, but because there were so many helpers, I can't name them all. THANK YOU TO ALL. I have to give a special thanks, though, to a few peopleJane Cohen and Carol Petrescu for organizing the baking, Karen Stesis for getting the kitchen ready, Karen Ernest and Fran Stier for inspiring us, and bringing the Shalach Manot idea to fruition, Donna Cohen for helping with ordering and supplies, and Leslie Beck for organizing and sending Purim packages to our kids at college. Of G-dliness, a dimension which transcends nature entirely. Nevertheless, this revelation negates and is not internalized within the limits of our worldly existence. Thus the miracles of Purim are a necessary complement for they involve the limits of nature. Nevertheless, they also require the complement of Pesach for they are lacking the dimension which transcends nature. To restate the concept in other terms: The miracles of Pesach represented the redemption from Egypt. However, Egypt was nullified, it was not transformed into good. In contrast, the miracles of Purim did reflect the transformation of Achashverosh. However, the redemption of Purim was not complete. Even afterwards, we remained subjects of Achashverosh. Thus, the ultimate of redemption reflects the fusion of both Pesach and Purim, that the forces of nature be transformed and not nullified, but that the redemption be complete and not partial. This will be revealed in the Era of Redemption when "as in the days of your exodus from Egypt, I will show you wonders; " i.e., there will be a revelation from Above which resembles indeed which transcends the revelations of the exodus from Egypt. Simultaneously, that revelation will be connected with the transformation not the nullification of the world as reflected by the prophecy, "I will transform the nations, [making them] pure of speech." We went to Friday night kabbalat Shabbat service once at the Christchurch Hebrew Congregation downtown. It's a combined synagogue with Orthodox services Shabbat mornings together with the Chabad branch in town and Progressive services 2 Friday nights a month. When we went, there were about 20 people, including a baby. After the aland Shabbat in New Ze service, a very nice couple, formerly American, invited us to dinner at their house.
